The Executive Committee of the DCDA recently voted to remove and sell for scrap, the newsprint recycling bin/service that has been in place for many years. Background info: In the 70s, 80s and 90s many non-profit or fraternal organizations, including The Dayton Chamber (precursor to the DCDA), used newsprint bins as a form of fund raising, while offering a valuable recycling service to the community. Initially, these bins were the only place to recycle newsprint. In recent decades, curbside recycling has become commonplace (even in many non-incorporated areas) and the consumption of newsprint has fallen drastically. The bin currently takes approximately 20-24 months to fill (it used to fill several times per year.) Additionally, the price of recycled newsprint has dropped to a very low price, virtually eliminating the fund raising aspect of the bin. Finally, the bin is damaged and is thoroughly rusted and will need maintenance in future.
The bin will be removed sometime this summer, Western Oregon Waste (the buyer) will want the bin to be as full as possible and we in the DCDA want to give folks some advance notice regarding the pending removal.
If you currently live in an unincorporated area and use the newsprint bin regularly, you can visit WOW's website for more recycling options/opportunities.
