Calling All Artists!

Artscape 2017 will be presented by Dayton Community Development Association and various sponsors. It is a community-building project created to add interest and color to our town. With the success of the 2016 Artscape, we are especially excited for 2017, as it will be bigger and better. Our Artscape 2016 event won an award, so we have a lot to live up to in 2017.

Your artwork might be on display around Dayton for the town to view in some fashion. We will end the summer with our Artscape Auction on September 23, 2017, where we will sell your artwork to the highest bidder. The funds will go to support the DCDA and all the work they are doing to make Dayton great!

If you are an artist and would like to participate and donate a piece of art in this year’s event, you will need to fill out the artist application form and apply by January 30th, 2017. Applications should be mailed to:

New Wine Barrel Planters Downtown

Four new artfully-painted wine barrel planters are adding color and style to the downtown Dayton streetscape. Local resident and DCDA super-volunteer Teresa Shelburne spearheaded this Dayton Community Development Association project. Teresa, an interior designer by trade, coordinated all aspects of the project, including acquiring the barrels, plants and materials as well as recruiting local volunteer artists. Businesses and building owners along Ferry Street graciously agreed to host and water the planters in front of their buildings. Each wine barrel is artistically painted with themes honoring Dayton’s agricultural heritage and planted with flowering and evergreen plants such as camellias and rosemary. The artists are Kylie Spivey, Heidi Lindell, Karol Crowder, and Jeannie Putman. The wine barrels and plants were generously donated by Stoller Family Estate, Red Ridge Farms and French Prairie Perennials. Look for more barrels to be added in coming months.

Farmland Geometry Comes to Downtown Dayton

If you take a stroll downtown on Ferry Street this summer, you’ll notice something new & colorful in the windows of the former Putt’s Market! Farmland Geometry is an art display facilitated by the DCDA with art pieces generously loaned by artists Richard Thompson, Sandy Till, Kathleen Bennett, Bonnie Russell, and Gloria Richardson. Building owner Bill Stoller generously loaned the use of the window space. It’s a great way to spruce up downtown while showcasing our talented local artists.

New Murals Installed in Downtown Dayton

A steamboat is back in town. A set of mural art panels depicting scenes from Dayton’s past and present have been installed on Ferry Street in downtown Dayton. The panels, a project of the Dayton Community Development Association, feature scenes honoring Dayton’s heritage and agriculture including one of the steamboats that used to navigate the Yamhill River to land in Dayton.

The murals were painted on 4 by 6 foot panels by artist Kev Kohler in his studio in Dallas. They were installed with the help of community volunteers in July 2012 along with a “Welcome to Dayton” sign hand painted by McMinnville sign painter Mitch Horning. The art offers a vivid glimpse of Dayton’s heritage to residents and visitors and an additional reason to visit Dayton’s historic downtown.

The project became a reality because of a generous award from the Yamhill County Cultural Coalition. Donations from Western AG Improvement and Carleton Hart Architecture and smaller private donations from local community members were also instrumental in bringing the project to fruition, as was in-kind support by volunteers Jason Aust of the Blockhouse Café in Dayton, Scott Spink and other local volunteers.

The Yamhill County Cultural Coalition is an Oregon non-profit organization funded by the Oregon Cultural Trust and private donations. YCCC’s mission is to increase cultural resources and opportunities in Yamhill County. For more information, please visit www.yamhillcountyculture.org.
